Christmas is just around the corner. Meinhardt Ambleside’s store manager, Nico, is from the Bavarian Region in Germany. During the holidays his family likes to celebrate with a traditional German feast of a succulent roast goose, Bavarian dumplings, gravy, and his favourite dish - red cabbage.
If you want to add some German flavour to your table this year try Nico’s delicious red cabbage recipe.
Ingredients:
2 TBSP butter (for extra flavour try bourbon butter)
5 cups shredded cabbage (1/2 - 1 head)
1 cup sliced green apple
⅓ cup apple cider vinegar
3 TBSP water
¼ cup sugar
2¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
¼ tsp ground cloves
Method:
1. Place everything in a large pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat
2. Once it is boiling reduce the heat to low and simmer until the cabbage is tender, about 1½ - 2 hours.
3. Serve either warm or cold and enjoy!
Tip:
For a really quick and easy version buy a jar of shredded red cabbage and add apple slices, butter, and seasonings. Simmer until the apples are cooked through. Add cornstarch slurry (cornstarch and water) to thicken if needed. Don't forget to tag us in your social media posts to show us your creations!
